Himachal Pradesh has long drawn backpackers who want mountains, fresh air, and a slower pace. Between its lakes, waterfalls, pine forests, and snowy ridgelines, the state also has a rich cultural side, with village folklore, local festivals, and Buddhist traditions that shape daily life. Two towns in the Kangra region show this mix especially well: McLeod Ganj and Bir.

McLeod Ganj: The Little Lhasa of the Himalayas

Perched above Dharamshala with the Dhauladhar range rising behind it, McLeod Ganj is known around the world as "Little Lhasa." It is home to a large Tibetan community, and the Dalai Lama's residence is here, so prayer flags, maroon-robed monks, and the hum of chanting are part of the everyday scene. The trail climbs through oak and rhododendron forest to an open ridge at about 2,800 meters (roughly 9,200 feet). From the top, the snow-covered Dhauladhars tower overhead while the Kangra Valley stretches out below. Many hikers camp overnight on the ridge for a sky full of stars and a sunrise over the peaks. It suits beginners with a reasonable level of fitness, and it is usually done as a day hike or a one-night camp.

Bir: India's Paragliding Capital

A short distance away, Bir is a small, relaxed town in the Kangra Valley. It is famous as one of the country's top paragliding spots. Pilots take off from the nearby meadows of Billing and glide down to land at Bir, and tandem flights let first-timers enjoy the view from above the valley. Adventure aside, Bir has a calm, creative character shaped by its Tibetan settlement.
